IPv4
- • Designed in the 1970s
- • Defined Common Addressing – Globally Unique Internet Address For Each Device
- • Has about 4 billion unique Internet Addresses
According to IANA, the organization that oversees Internet addresses assignments worldwide, there are only about 6% percent of the IPv4 addresses left unassigned. It is projected that with the current rate of Internet growth all available IPv4 addresses will be used in a matter of 1 to 2 years thus preventing further Internet growth and innovations.
IPv6
- • Next Generation of the Internet Protocol
- • currently being deployed worldwide
- • vastly greater address space
IPv6 provides 2^128 or 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 unique Internet addresses. and that is believed to be enough for all practical purposes for the foreseeable future. It also aims to improve several other important aspects of Internet communications, such as security, mobility, quality of service etc.
Transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6
IPv6 is not compatible with IPv4, which means that device that has IPv6-only connectivity cannot easily communicate to IPv4-only device and vice-versa. A number of technologies have been developed to overcome this limitation.Dual-Stack Mode
The most fundamental technology to overcome this limitation, Dual-Stack mode allows a device to have both IPv6 and IPv4 connectivity and use both of them as needed. Resources available through IPv6 are communicated to using IPv6, while IPv4-only resources are communicated to using IPv4.
This allows early-adopters to maintain full Internet visibility and implement a gradual migration without service disruption.
All IPv6-enabled services will be delivered in Dual-Stack mode allowing full connectivity to both IPv4 and IPv6 Internet. IPv6-only service is also available for those who need it.
IPv6-enabled service requires an IPv6-enabled CPE device. Such a device can be pre-configured and provided by Ace, or customers can provide and support their own.
